Q:á When does the board meet?

A:á Thursday evenings, as follows:á
á
Business meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, starting at 7 p.m.á Exceptions are noted on the School Board Calendar (refer to the link below).

In addition to business meetings, the board meets in work sessions to review a variety of topics, most of which pertain to progress being made on the district's Initiatives and Board/Executive Projects.á Work sessions are also held on Thursday evenings, beginning at 6 p.m.á (Refer to the School Board Calendar link below.)

The board holds its summer planning retreat in August.á There are no other school board meetings in August.

A:á Yes.á

All school board meetings are open to the public, with the exception of executive sessions.á (See "What does the board do in executive session?" below.)

Q:á What does the board do in executive session?

A:á Pursuant to ORS 192.660, the board may discuss confidential matters in executive session, such as personnel, negotiations, litigation, expulsions, and real estate transactions.á
á
Board members cannot make decisions or vote in executive sessions.á

Executive sessions are not open to the public, and they are limited to specific topics and guidelines as defined by state statutes.áááá

Q:á What is the board's role?

A:á The seven-member school board is responsible for:
  • providing an educational program for the district's students;
  • settingádistrict policy and planning priorities upon which all administrative actions are based; and
  • hiring and evaluating the superintendent.
In turn, the superintendent is responsible for carrying out board decisions, providing educational leadership, and managing the district's budget and staff.
á

Q:á How are school board members compensated?

A:á School board members are elected officials and serve without pay / compensation.
á
Their service is voluntary, and they do not have offices in school district buildings.
á


Q:á How can I speak at a board meeting?

A:á Complete a request form (pdf), bring it with you to the board meeting, and give it to the board secretary before the meeting is called to order.

Request forms (pdf) will also be available at the meeting; they can be found on a table near the entrance where copies of the meeting agenda will be provided.á

The chair will call on individuals to speak during the "Citizens Requests of the Board" portion of the meeting agenda.á Because these are meetings of the board, however, guests will be asked to limit their comments to 3 minutes per person, for a maximum of 15 minutes for all speakers combined.

Anyone can speak at a board meeting.

Written comments are also welcome.á
