FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Volunteers needed to help students improve their reading skills

Oasis Program provides training, materials, and support

The Oasis volunteer program is working with the Gresham-Barlow District to match caring adults with young children who are struggling to learn to read. We are seeking adult volunteers who can spend one hour a week, during the school day, working one-on-one with a child in grades 1-5 to build reading and language skills, self-esteem, and positive attitudes toward learning. The Oasis program provides training, materials, and on-going support free of charge.

The training to be an Oasis volunteer takes place in two, three-hour sessions, for a total of six hours. The program’s fall training dates are Tuesday, January 29 from 9 am-12 pm and Wednesday, January 30 from 9 am-12 pm. During the school year, Oasis tutors are encouraged to attend a monthly support meeting to share experiences with other tutors, and receive additional training and materials.

No teaching experience is required. The role of an Oasis tutor is that of a friend. Oasis volunteers offer experience, patience, encouragement, and caring to the students they tutor.

If you, or someone you know would be interested in learning more about becoming an Oasis tutor, please call Gresham-Barlow School District Oasis Volunteer Coordinator Marilyn Shephard at 503-665-3544 or email msshephard@frontier.com.
