FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gordon Russell Middle School Principal Named

The Gresham-Barlow School District has selected Rolland Hayden to be the next principal of Gordon Russell Middle School. Hayden currently works as the curriculum assistant principal at North Salem High School, located in the Salem-Keizer School District. He has served in that position since 2010.

“Rolland excels at shared leadership and makes building strong relationships with students and families a priority,” said Superintendent Jim Schlachter. “He has the skills and background we look for when selecting school leaders. I am confident he will do a great job at Gordon Russell Middle School.”

Prior to joining the administrative ranks, Hayden taught at Claggett Creek Middle School for seven years specializing in middle school choir as well as teaching in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program.

His choirs won numerous awards and honors including placing first at the Best In The Northwest Choir Festival.  During his tenure at Claggett Creek Middle School he coached football, wrestling, and track.

He was also a member of Salem-Keizer’s district technology team charged with developing new ways for teachers to easily access student data.  Mr. Hayden is a certified Data Team trainer and is a proponent of collaborative teams.

In 2010 Hayden was honored with the Apple for the Teacher Award from The Standard-Examiner Newspapers in Education Program. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in education from Portland State University. He earned his administrative license from Willamette University.

Hayden replaces Bruce Schmidt who will serve as principal of Sam Barlow High School next year.
