Jeff Schroeder Receives Oregon Thespians Award
Congratulations to our Theatre Teacher and Director Jeff Schroeder! The Oregon Thespians, a chapter of the International Thespian Society named Mr. Schroeder the 2020 recipient of the REX RABOLD MEMORIAL AWARD. Mr. Schroeder was nominated for his tremendous work in building the theatre program at Sam Barlow High School into a state and nationally distinguished program in only 6 years and for being such a positive, caring and life-changing teacher to so many students during that time.
The REX RABOLD MEMORIAL AWARD is named in memory of Rex Rabold, graduate of South Salem High School and Western Oregon University, who distinguished himself as an actor and teacher, primarily at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ashland. Rex passed away in 1990.
Bruce Schmidt Receives Award from Oregon Music Educators Asssociation
Each year, the Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA) takes nominations from its members for its “Outstanding Administrator Award.” The award is presented at the annual conference banquet in January.
This past fall, Sam Barlow High School (SBHS) band director Paul Nicholas took it upon himself to ask six people to join him in writing nomination letters for Principal Bruce Schmidt. The list of supporters for the award included current and retired educators, parents, volunteers, and students. All were eager to write a letter as they have worked with Bruce in various capacities and all know his level of passion for the SBHS music programs. In early January, the District learned that Principal Schmidt had been named the 2020 OMEA Outstanding Administrator!
The OMEA’s annual awards banquet was held on January 18 at the Graduate Eugene Hotel and Convention Center in Eugene, Oregon. Principal Schmidt and his family, SBHS Band Director Paul Nicholas, SBHS Choir Director Amber Schroeder, and hundreds of music educators from around the state attended. The event took place at the Graduate Eugene Hotel and Convention Center in Eugene, Oregon.
Congratulations Principal Schmidt and thank you for the work you do to support SBH’s student body, staff, and families. This recognition was well-earned!
ASPIRE is a program that connects community volunteers with students to both mentor and assist them in choosing post high school options as well as completing applications for college and scholarships. Our ASPIRE Program has been instrumental in helping students succeed after high school by showing them the various options available to them. We are looking for more volunteers to become part of the ASPIRE Program and help in our College and Career Center. For more information, view this Video Clip. If you are interested, please contact Patty Neuenschwander in the College and Career Center at 503.258.4890.
Student of the Month
As part of our student recognition program we send PRIDE Notes (a post card) home to students who have demonstrated Purpose, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence. Each month we then compile a list of students, by grade level, and generate a ballot for staff to vote both a male and female student to become a Student of the Month. In order to spotlight our best and brightest, students receive a certificate, their picture is hung in a main hall for the month, and they get a PRIDE T-shirt.
