SUPPORTING EARLY LITERACY INSTRUCTION DURING PANDEMIC
Teachers across our District are working hard to address the unique challenges of COVID-19. After a summer training in Enhanced Core Reading Instruction (ECRI), teachers found that teaching phonics with their mouths covered was a struggle. As a result, teachers explored new ways of supporting students. At the request of the teachers, the District provided clear masks that allowed students to see their teacher’s mouth moving during instruction. In addition, teachers found cards that showed pictures of the mouth’s movement when forming sounds.
Learning to read is vital to student success and these teachers and students are creatively and thoughtfully working together to provide the best possible learning experience in Gresham-Barlow.

MENTAL HEALTH/COUNSELING UPDATE

With the pandemic still raising anxiety everywhere, the GBSD is focusing on mental health this year. The District has launched Care Solace, a partnership that assists staff and families in finding the right mental health care for them quickly and efficiently. The District has also started rolling out a district-wide Social Emotional Program called RULER and we are in the process of updating our Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, suicide prevention and response protocols, as well as the flight team manual.

SAM BARLOW HIGH SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM PARTNERS WITH HOME BUILDERS FOUNDATION

The Home Builders Foundation (HBF) recently spotlighted the Sam Barlow High School Construction Program on its website. HBF is partnering with SBHS and instructor Josh Pikop by providing wood/supplies for a project designed to provide support for women in need of housing.
UPDATE FROM NUTRITION SERVICES: MILK OPTION FOR STUDENTS WHO BRING LUNCH FROM HOME
In previous years, many students who brought their lunch from home purchased milk from the cafeteria to have along with their lunch. This year, while all meals are free for all students, milk alone still costs fifty cents. Students who bring their lunches from home and wish to add to that lunch can instead ask serving staff for a free Fuel Pack. This Fuel Pack counts as a reimbursable meal and will consist of one milk, a serving of fruit, and a serving of vegetables. Fuel Packs will only be available to students who do not take a school lunch and are a great free option for students to complement their meals from home with extra nutrition.
We welcomed new staff members to GBSD this fall by rolling out the red carpet! Members of the district’s leadership team, principals, and the GHS dance team celebrated their arrival at Gresham High School. Go Team GBSD!
Play-Doh for the win! Kindergarteners in Mrs. Stowe’s class at Hogan Cedars Elementary used Play-Doh to trace their names. What a great way to combine learning and fun!
Who better to talk to students at Hall Elementary about football than Oregon Ducks’ former outside linebacker La'Mar Winston! Mr. Winston is the recess coach at Hall and coaches football at Gresham High.
