    August 19, 2021

    Dear GBSD Community,

Today Governor Kate Brown announced that she would be directing the Oregon Health Authority (OHA)  to issue a rule requiring all public and private school staff members and volunteers to be fully vaccinated by October 18, or six weeks from FDA approval, whichever is later. As with state employees and healthcare workers - religious and medical/disability related exceptions apply.

The Gresham-Barlow School District is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment so students can participate in full-time, in-person instruction. The Oregon Department of Education has shared with school districts that there are two keys to keeping our students in classrooms with minimal disruptions:

-Because most people in schools are unvaccinated (children under 12 are not yet eligible) masks are a critical tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in a school setting.

-Also important is ensuring all adults in school buildings are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 so that they are safe and able to reliably provide in-person instruction.

This is a fluid situation and we will be processing what we have learned this morning with our school board, leadership team, and association leadership. In addition, OHA will be providing more details for school districts regarding how this new requirement is to be put into place. Our Return to Learn Health and Safety Plan will be updated once we have specifics.

As we approach the beginning of the school year, thank you for partnering with us to provide a quality educational experience for each student. We appreciate your support and patience as we continue to navigate this ever-changing pandemic’s impacts on our students, our families and our employees.

    Sincerely,

    Gresham-Barlow School District
