GBSD students shine at annual regional STEM Expo

GHS team to represent GBSD at the International Science Fair in May

A team of Gresham High School (GHS) science students qualified at the annual regional STEM EXPO (GBSE) to compete at state and international science fairs later this spring.

GHS student team wins second in chemistry at STEM Expo

The team, consisting of Ben Graham, Jack Dillon, and Luong Nygen, placed 2nd in the chemistry category at the event held at Gresham High School (GHS) on March 7.

The students presented a continuation of their project from last year on testing common acids to weaken building structures during the demolition process.

GHS science teacher Cyrus Harshfield advises the students and is thrilled about their accomplishment.

Harshfield shared that it is a significant achievement to be the best project in the District and is noteworthy enough to include on their resumes. He said the competition allowed the students to experience the success of their hard work. They also learned what it’s like to champion their own idea.

Over 20 GBSD students participated and entered 15 projects.

The GBSE is the Northwest Science Expo System’s at-large regional fair.

GHS has hosted the event since 2010.

The event is possible thanks to GHS high school teachers, support staff, and administrators. The Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation provides financial support, and this year and the Portland Metro STEAM Partnership also provided support.
