Hollydale Elementary Hosts Inaugural African American Cultural Night

Event featured student presentations, wide range of musical performances

Hollydale Elementary hosted families for an engaging event featuring student presentations on African American leaders like Simone Biles, Martin Luther King, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Students and families dance with drummers

GBSD staff performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” to begin the event and “True Colors” with a guitar accompaniment. Students sang “In that Great Getting Up Morning” and “Wade in the Water” with a few students performing drumming solos. Woshishijee, a professional music

group, performed traditional Ghanese  drumming, prompting attendees of all ages to get up and dance.

Hollydale music teacher Mzuri Robertson organized the celebration.

“My goal was to bring all cultures in the community together to celebrate African American culture,” said Robertson.

Families toured the student projects and enjoyed desserts such as peach cobbler together after the performances. Thank you Ms. Robertson and Hollydale Elementary for the amazing event!
