Long-time GBSD substitute teacher wins prestigious state award

Norman Paul Chambers is passionate about working with students and celebrating their unique personalities

Edustaff awarded Norman Paul Chambers their Oregon Substitute of the Year award. Edustaff is a national leading K-12 substitute staffing organization. Each year, they ask for nominations and award a substitute teacher the honor.

Edustaff Substitute of the Year - Norman Paul Chambers

Teachers and administrators appreciate that Chambers is always on time and is willing to sub in all classes, even ones that pose a challenge.

He takes the time to build real relationships with his students. This, along with his can-do attitude, has set Paul apart as an outstanding substitute teacher for the district.

"I never have to worry about my students or their learning when he subs for me," one staff member noted. "He really knows the kids well, follows my plans to a tee, and leaves my room in good shape for the next day."

With 24 years of previous experience teaching third and fourth grade, Chambers began subbing 10 years ago and hasn't looked back.

For those just starting out as a substitute, Paul offers this advice: "You have to like kids. Keep smiling. Be flexible. Make sure you know the schedule for the day and be prepared for the kid that will challenge you. Every class has at least one."

Edustaff chooses the winner based on the nominations that are submitted. Each submission is sent in by staff in the substitute’s school district. Edustaff award judges look specifically for qualities such as commitment to service, passion for students, and ability to display empathy for others.
