In March, Sam Barlow High School senior Maddy Green was crowned the Metro East Rose Princess for the Portland Rose Festival Court Program.  She is the first Gresham-Barlow School District student to receive this honor.

“Everyone’s been really excited for me, my college coordinator emailed all the school staff when I was a finalist,” exclaimed Green. “Everyone gave me high fives in the hallway when it was announced I won.”

The Rose Festival Court Program comprises up to 15 outstanding students selected from Portland Metro-area high schools. The program provides scholarships for higher education, promotes community outreach and volunteerism, and offers networking and mentoring opportunities to young women.

Court Members receive a $5,000 scholarship. After a series of training sessions, the Court visits community events, hospitals, senior living centers, youth organizations, civic groups, meets with business leaders, and participates in the Rose Festival's parades and events.  The rose festival queen will be crowned in early June.

“It’s important to me to continue a tradition that I watched as a kid and maybe inspire others to take part in this for my school and my community,” said Green.

Maddy Green is an accomplished student leader at Sam Barlow High School who’s known for her dedication to academics, athletics, and service.

She’s maintained a 4.0 GPA, taking AP and college-level courses, while being a talented athlete competing in Varsity water polo, swim, and tennis.

She competed in varsity water polo all four years, earning First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State honors.

Additionally, she’s a three-time state-qualified speech and debate competitor. She credits the program for giving her the stage presence and confidence to succeed in the Rose Court.

Though talented in so many areas, she’s most known for her resilience and compassion.

“I am truly most proud of staying committed to my schooling, as well as taking care of my family and home,” expressed Green.

She plans to attend Columbia University in New York City to study biology with the goal of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon or OB-GYN. She will also continue to pour into her relationships with neighbors, family, friends, and those at her great-grandparents’ old folks home.
