Superintendent Hiu to retire end of December

Gresham-Barlow School District Superintendent James Hiu announced at the July 3 regular school board meeting that he

plans to retire from the school district at the end of  December.

"I am grateful for the opportunity I've had to build meaningful relationships with our students, families, staff, and community," said Superintendent James Hiu. "I am proud

of our collective progress in enhancing educational outcomes and promoting equity and inclusivity for our students."

Superintendent Hiu thanked the school board and district staff for partnering with him to serve the community's students.

"Together, we have achieved significant milestones and paved the way for a bright future for GBSD students," Hiu said.

Superintendent Hiu has served as superintendent of the Gresham-Barlow School District for three years. Before becoming superintendent, he served as deputy superintendent and oversaw the human resources department. Before that, he served as deputy superintendent of secondary education and operations. He was the principal of Sam Barlow High School from 2004-2010.  

Hiu served as the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators (COSA) president during the 2019-20 school year. In 2016, he was president of the Oregon Association for Central Office Administrators (OACOA). He served as president of the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Executive Board in 2014-2015

Superintendent Hiu shared that he announced his retirement plans to allow the school board time to conduct a superintendent search. Hiu's last day with the district will be December 31, 2024.
