Structured Skills Center (SSC)
OVERVIEW
The goal of the SSC Program is to assist K-8 students who have social, emotional and behavioral challenges with learning the skills they need to successfully learn and grow. This program is self-contained, highly structured and provides specially designed instruction for students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and a documented need for a higher level of support. We maintain a high staff-to-student ratio and the highly trained staff is dedicated to providing a safe and positive learning environment.
Since the goal of the program is to help students gain the skills they need to be successful in a less restrictive setting, the SSC program is considered temporary. Participation in the program will be reviewed continuously based on progress toward goals to determine if transition back to the neighborhood school is appropriate, and if so, to what degree.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS
In an effort to meet students’ needs, GBSD offers a specialized, structured program for K-8 students with special behavioral, social, and emotional needs for a temporary time period. SSC programming is based on applied behavior analysis theory, cognitive behavioral theory, and restorative practices including the following:
- PBIS school-wide systems
- Restorative practices in classrooms
- Individualized behavioral assessment and intervention, supported by a dedicated Behavior Coach and Licensed Social Worker.
- Structured system for responding to behaviors with reinforcement/consequences
- Small group, explicit instruction in social skills, self-regulation, problem solving, and executive functioning.
INSTRUCTION
Our instructional emphasis is on identifying and teaching lagging social/emotional/behavioral skills to students in the SSC Program. Students are also taught academics aligned with district-adopted curriculum, but it should be noted that the emphasis is on growth in behavior/social/emotional areas, as the SSC is a temporary placement.
