Important Reminder about Phishing Schemes
Posted: December 20, 2017Email users need to be on guard against internet phishing scams. In these scams, thieves contact users via email, asking for personal email account information, credit card numbers, ATM PINs, social security numbers, or other information. These scams can be hard to spot, since the emails frequently have an official looking appearance and message. They may contain the logo of the organization they are impersonating, or include a link to what looks like an official website, but is actually a fake website set up to deceive users.
If you receive an unexpected email from an organization asking for personal information, password verification, etc., contact the organization by telephone before replying to verify that the request is real. A prime example of this are messages that appear to be from the “Help Desk” directing you to verify your Google Apps login information by entering that information into a web site. Under no circumstances will the GBSD Help Desk ask for users to verify login information through an online form or website.
