In October staff members from a local construction company visited Hollydale Elementary School to share the exciting career opportunities in the construction industry. Hollydale students stretching in their classroom

The visit was part of “Construction Inclusion Week” which focuses on providing information about the construction industry to future generations. The week is an effort by the construction industry to make the field more inclusive as it continues to grow its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The local construction company, Mortenson, visited third grade classrooms to show multiple career paths through hands-on activities that focused on:

  • How to understand the importance and impact of construction safety

  • How communication affects quality

  • How to estimate using fraction action

The students were excited to learn how popular technology, like virtual reality, is becoming an essential tool in the industry.

Mortenson staff talked with the students about different avenues in construction and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

“We’re a big proponent of the ‘If you can see it, you can be it’ philosophy…It was great to see how it really started clicking with them,” said Mortenson Senior Community Empowerment Specialist Lindsay Verdugo.
