Gordon Russell Middle School hosts 31st Tom Meinig/Special Olympics for Gresham-Barlow School and Reynolds School District students

Learning Essentials special education classroom and volunteers organize event to help bring awareness to intellectual disabilities

Students racing in Special OlympicsOn May 11, Gordon Russell Middle School (GRMS) held its 31st Tom Meinig/Special Olympics for Gresham-Barlow School District (GBSD) and Reynolds School Distirct’s (RSD) elementary and middle school students.  Over 200 athletes competed in the following events, choosing 1 track event and 2 field events: 

  • Track Events

    • Wheelchair

    • Walking

    • Running Races

  • Field Events

    • Shot Put

    • Softball Throw

    • Tennis Ball Throwing

    • High Jump

    • Running Long Jump

    • Standing Long Jump

Superintendent James with family & Gordon Russell Middle School staff accepting donation from Tom Meinig's daughter's familyThe GRMS Special Olympics event was started by former GBSD Special Education teacher Tom Meinig. The event was named the Tom Meinig Olympics to honor him after his passing 21 years ago. McDonald’s presented a donation at the event, coming from the family of one of his daughters who owns the local franchises. The donation will help GRMS pay for future event items.
