Superintendent Perera to leave at the end of 20-21 school year

Perera to take superintendency in Texas

Gresham-Barlow School Superintendent Dr. A. Katrise Perera has announced that she will be leaving the school district at the end of the school year to take a superintendency with the Lancaster Independent School District in Texas.

“It has been a great honor to serve the students, staff, families, and community of the Gresham-Barlow School District,” said Superintendent Dr. A. Katrise Perera. “The decision to leave GBSD has been a difficult one; however, this opportunity will allow me to live closer to my family, who need support and assistance.”

In her announcement, Superintendent Perera recounted many of the accomplishments that took place during her tenure.

“Our graduation rates are on the rise and our formative assessments have shown students are continuing to learn and grow despite the pandemic,” Perera said.  “We have expanded our career-technical education programs of study, launched a dual language immersion program, and much more.”

During Perera’s time with the school district, the district completed a majority of the projects in its 2016 school bond program, to include the construction of two replacement elementary schools, the renovation of two high schools, along with other school campus renovations. The 2016 school bond program also included the installation of safety and security measures, new playground equipment for each elementary school, STEM labs which are being completed at each middle school, as well as additional projects.

Superintendent Perera has served as superintendent of the Gresham-Barlow School District since 2017.  Prior to that, she served as a corporate executive for McGraw-Hill Education. She served as superintendent of the Isle of Wight County Schools in Virginia  from 2011-2015. Perera was named Superintendent of the Year by the National Association of School Superintendents in 2015.

The school board will determine next steps soon. Perera’s last day with the district will be June 30, 2021.
