Gresham-Barlow School District selects interim principal for Gresham High School
The Gresham-Barlow School District (GBSD) has selected Terrence Smyth as the interim principal for Gresham High School (GHS). Smyth knows the Gresham-Barlow community well, serving as principal of Springwater Trail High School from 2007-2015. He previously served as principal of Jewell Junior-Senior High School in the Jewell School District. Prior to that he served as superintendent of the Knappa School District.
“I am confident that Mr. Smyth will do a great job supporting students, staff, and the entire Gresham High School community,” said Superintendent Katrise Perera. “He has eight years of experience working as a high school principal in our school district, and is an instructional leader with a heart for students, with proven leadership success.”
Smyth has an administrative license from Lewis and Clark Graduate School and a master’s degree in education from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Pomona College in Claremont.
Before joining the administrative ranks, Smyth taught social studies at the high school level and was a wrestling coach. He will begin serving as the interim principal of GHS on April 1 and will continue in that position through the end of the school year.
A community meet-n-greet will be held to introduce Mr. Smyth after spring break. Details will be announced once they are finalized.
The Gresham-Barlow School District is currently in the process of hiring a permanent principal for Gresham High School. The process will include gathering feedback from students, staff, parents, and the community on the skills and attributes desired in the next principal. Once the feedback is collected, a committee made up of various stakeholders will conduct interviews with prospective candidates. The District is working to have someone selected prior to the end of the 2018-19 school year. Gresham High School’s former principal, Michael Schaefer, resigned from the position in March due to health concerns.
