GBSD response to Gresham Police Announcement on SRO Program

July 13, 2022

Dear Gresham-Barlow Community,

On July 12 the Gresham Police Department (GPD) announced it would be pausing the School Resource Officer Program due to a staffing shortage.

While we are disappointed to hear that the GPD will be pausing the program, we understand the challenges the police department is facing and their need to re-deploy SROs to patrol positions.

The school resource officer program is critically important to our schools and an essential part of our school safety equation. We are contacting other law enforcement agencies to determine if there are other options available to us during this time. We will provide an update on this work prior to the start of school.

In addition, the consulting team hired to conduct the GBSD’s School Resource Officer Outreach and Review Process has completed its work.  The District will share the team’s findings with the board and the community this fall.

Sincerely,

James Hiu

Superintendent of Schools
